Holiday Music Guides!
The Daily Indie Staff (Brandon, Christy and Alisha) would like to present to you a guide to some of the best gifts for the music lovers in your family. Basically, we got a slew of cool CD's to review and here are our thoughts. If you would like a copy of any of them, comment on this blog and tell me which one you would like. Your friend, Christy.
Alisha - I haven’t listened to Paul McCartney since The Beatles (OK, maybe Wings), but I was happily surprised when I heard this record. His voice is timeless and his songwriting is still great too! Brandon - I feel like he's lost some of his lyrical prowess over the years, but he can still write a great pop melody. Plus you have to get the DVD just for Natalie Portman! Alisha - Love it… Coltrane’s music is so sax-ual. Liner notes are superb! <3 STATS: Double CD re-mastered audio plus B-sides and previously unreleased tracks Christy - I totally 1987’d out in my car while listening to this. A good gift for hardcore U2 fans, or maybe a generous introduction to a young musically inclined family member. (Generous in the fact that it’s a double disc with lovely packaging.) Teach that 10 year-old Fall Out Boy nephew of yours a lesson. Alisha - If you love U2, you’ll love hearing all the songs you’ve heard a million times before. The previously unreleased tracks are a must for the ultimate fan and U2 collector! Christy - I’m not a Christmas music fan, but this album was great. One of the best holiday re-issues of all time. Alisha - Love the group, but a little disappointed that it clocked in at 30 minutes, I wanted more!
STATS: Deluxe 24-bit remastered and expanded edition, featuring the famous Peanuts characters Your Office Holiday Gift ExchangeHere’s what you bring:
“Pop princess Ashlee Simpson - never before known for her politics - is selling fingerless gloves with the anarchy "A" symbol for $19.99.” For other brilliant ideas, including the Bon Jovi Thong, the Sean Kingston panties and the John Mayer Glow-In-The-Dark Frisbee, go HERE. I dare you to bring the Sean Kingston panties to the office holiday party. Nirvana Unplugged DVD
There is a moment in the Nirvana Unplugged DVD where Curt Kobain is spinning in a desk chair back and forth, like a little kid in a sweater that’s a size too big. It’s an image I’ve never associated with him—I usually picture a morose figure hunched over with clear blue eyes. And, this is just one of the many moments in the DVD that changed my perspective of the band that I thought I remembered.
While I was watching the un-edited long version, I noticed an interesting level of tension between the MTV producers and Cobain. This was 14 years ago, imagine what he would say about MTV now. But he makes a couple of sarcastic jokes at their expense and the audience laughs with him. He didn’t play a lot of hits as MTV wished, or bring a slew of famous guests on stage (he only invited The Meat Puppets), but this unplugged special is still one of the most important pieces of music history. It was filmed 4 months prior to Cobain’s suicide, and captures the band at a delicate peak of fame and maybe a bit of desired anonymity.
The DVD includes the shortened broadcast version as well as the entire set list version. It also includes bonus interviews and rehearsals. Oh, and Dave Grohl looks sooo young, I always think of him as the bearded Foo Fighter I liked in highschool, but here he is clean shaven with a 90's low ponytail.
Anyways, this is a good holiday gift for Nirvana fans or music buffs. Nothing like a Nirvana special to bring the whole family together this holiday season. I will tell you that this DVD made me realize how much I miss 'Unplugged', I miss watching it and recording it on a crappy VHS tape. Why are there no MTV 'Unplugged' specials anymore?! I mean 'The Hills' is good and all, but MTV I miss 'Unplugged'.
